Ubuntu Budgie 17.10, a version that will depend less on Gnome

Ubuntu Budgie

A few days ago we have among us the second alphas of the official Ubuntu 17.10 flavors. Some versions that we cannot use as the default operating system on production equipment, but it does help us to know what news we will have for the new version.

Ubuntu Budgie is the new official Ubuntu flavor and that is why many eyes are focused on this official flavor, especially when it is based on a desktop that was born for another distribution that has nothing to do with Ubuntu or Debian.

Budgie Desktop is finally shedding the weight of Gnome. For the next version no longer have Gnome Contacts, Gnome Photos and Gnome Docs, Gnome desktop programs that will be replaced in some cases by other programs such as gThumb.

Plank will cease to be the distribution dock, although in Ubuntu Budgie 17.10 it still remains, but unlike other editions, Plank can now be uninstalled without breaking any programs or packages. Something that will be useful if we take into account that the next versions of Budgie Desktop will allow the use of the panel as a distribution dock.

Budgie Welcome has also changed. This program includes some changes that correct bugs but also that link to programs in snap format and flatpak format for users who want to try it, something useful if we still do not use programs in those formats. In this second alpha some important bugs have already been fixed like Dropbox applet problems or previewing videos from file manager without any problem.

The second alpha of Ubuntu Budgie 17.10 can be obtained from this link. Although we must warn that the new installation image is not for production computers, since we could have problems with the files, therefore it is recommended to test in a virtual machine with a secure environment.
