Ubuntu Budgie 23.04 arrives with Budgie 10.7, improves support for the Raspberry Pi and introduces new features in its applets

Ubuntu Budgie 23.04

It happens in all families. The smallest one is treated in a different way, and this one also behaves in his way. For several years, the development team for the Budgie flavor of Ubuntu seemed more animated, they were the first to break the news, they prepared everything before anyone else... but now that it has three younger brothers it seems that it has matured, at least a little. Some differences have been noticed, such as, for example, that the download page has not shown anything of Ubuntu Budgie 23.04 later than usual.

It is the feeling that I have taken this morning, going to their web page and seeing that they did not have the tab on Ubuntu Budgie 23.04 as a hole caught (the anglicism placeholder is the word used in these cases). But the fact is that I already know has published a new version, and this is another one of those articles where we cover the news of an update to one of the official flavors of Ubuntu.

What's new in Ubuntu Budgie 23.04

  • Supported for 9 months, until January 2024.
  • Linux 6.2.
  • Budgie 10.7.1, where most of the novelties are found. For a complete list, it is worth visiting the article they published on April 11.
  • Applets and mini-apps:
    • Many updated translations.
    • The clocks in the clock applet now vary up to 24h.
    • The weather applet has been reworked to work better regardless of whether the light or dark theme is chosen.
    • Fixed ShowTime, Weather applet disappearing from desktop after login.
    • The weather applet now supports searching by local characters, ie not just ascii.
    • Both the screenshot applet and the haste applet have been archived by their author, so they will remove the ability to install these applets in version 23.04. They will leave it for 22.04 & 22.10 as they are stable releases, but those using it should note that support has been dropped.
    • Updated budgie-analogue-applet. Now displays correctly when using fractional scaling. Also, the clock is available as a raven widget to be added.
    • Improved the applet of the corners (where you can configure actions).
    • Window Shuffler now allows you to stack on a quarter of the screen using the keyboard or mouse.
    • There is a new applet that replaces the old user prompt.

NOTE: : Some of these applets are only available if you use the project's Daily repository:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntubudgie-dev/budgie-extras-daily && sudo apt upgrade
  • Improvements for the Raspberry Pi:
    • Budgie Pi VNC options are now per user instead of per system.
    • Added some options like “ask if connection is accepted” and view only mode.
    • Added a popup notification when a remote machine connects.
    • You can also disable the restriction to accept connections only from the local subnet. Another benefit is that since this server uses a password hash file instead of the gnome keychain, we don't have to recommend disabling the password keychain in order for the VNC server to accept connections if auto-login is enabled.
    • The Remote Pi option is now cleaner and more consistent, and doesn't freeze during installs.
  • Theme updates.
  • The default font in the terminal becomes Noto Mono Bold, size 11. In the Raspberry version it is the same, but without bold.

Update

Before beginning any upgrade process, it is worth make a backup of all important documents, because although there are usually no problems, it is not guaranteed that the process will not break something.

It is important to remember that you have to have the ubuntu-budgie-desktop package; if it is not, it is installed. Once installed, you can open the terminal and type update-manager. When the app opens, just follow the instructions on the screen.

For new installations, the new image is already available on the Ubuntu Budgie download page, or also by clicking the following button:
