Ubuntu MATE will finally have MIR

By making the change from Unity to Gnome, Ubuntu has also left important projects like MIR as a graphical server. This application originally created by Canonical and Ubuntu will be replaced by Wayland after the release of Ubuntu 17.10. But this does not mean the end of MIR.

The leader of Ubuntu MATE, Martin Wimpress, has confirmed the development and support of MIR by the official flavor based on MATE as the main desktop.MIR will not only be supported by Ubuntu MATE but will also be present in the next versions of the official Ubuntu flavor. This is because the official flavor does not have as much support as to be able to maintain the development and adaptation of Wayland to the distribution. Its development for MATE is very incipient while for MIR it is more advanced. This is why Ubuntu MATE has leaned.

Ubuntu MATE will use MIR to communicate MATE with the rest of the distribution

At this point both MIR and Wayland will not act as graphic servers themselves, but will be the interface or the layer that the window manager communicates with the rest of the operating system. Something that goes beyond the redrawing of windows or the mouse icon but a layer that manages all the actions of the window manager. The most curious thing about the MIR case is that Ubuntu and Canonical did it because Wayland was having a very slow development and finally it seems that Wayland surpassed MIR. But this is not the end of MIR as an application and as a graphical server.

So it seems that eventually the development of MIR will stay alive. At least thanks to Ubuntu MATE and who knows, just the same in the not too distant future, MIR will be the graphical server for Ubuntu and many other distributions. But for that there is still a lot Do not you think?

Ubuntu-Mate is elegant and I really like it but I also love Lubuntu. The first because I find it easy to use and the second because of its simplicity ... Currently I have Lubuntu on my note because it is the only one that does not crash when I close the screen hahahaha and what I did not like .. they are marrying gnome a lot > _
