Vulkan support could be coming soon to Ubuntu Linux Mir Display Server

Vulkan on Mir Display Server

As you all know, Unity 8 it will be the graphical environment to be used in Ubuntu in the future. Months ago we all expected it to be the default graphical environment for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, but it was not even available as an option. Yes it will be in Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak, but as an option, that is, the default graphical environment will continue to be Unity 7 but we can enter Unity 8 from the login options.

Canonical already uses Unity 8 on phones and tablets that use Ubuntu Touch, powered by the Mir display server, another Canonical innovation. Now that these technologies are being ported to Ubuntu Desktop, the new features are being delivered to the Launchpad.

Full support for Vulkan on Mir 0.24

The current version of Mir is v0.22.1, but a request performed by Emanuele Antonio Faraone at the end of January caught the attention of Canonical. Faraone asked Ubuntu developers to implement full support for the libraries of Vulkan on Mir display server and Ubuntu system image, and it looks like your wishes will come true.

The initial integration with Vulkan (MESA) was done a few weeks ago, but it uses some private headers. There were a few new Mir interfaces that had yet to be released. Once published in the developer chest, it will be time for them to come out in an official release (0.24).

Right now, Canonical intends for the full Vulkan API implementation to arrive in version look 0.24, which is now being the focus of development, but there is still work to be done to make Vulkan work as expected on Mir. Reading this information, I can't help but think about when Unity 8 will work flawlessly on Ubuntu Desktop. If it does, in October I will consider using the standard version of Ubuntu again.
