WPS Office, how to install this office suite in Ubuntu

WPS Office

I believe that few users start to take their first steps in computing using a Linux-based operating system. We will most likely start using Windows, or Mac if you hurry me, which is why we sometimes miss Linux software looking a bit more like what we used before we became what is known as a "switcher" . You can understand what I mean if we compare GIMP with Photoshop or LibreOffice with Microsoft Office. Regarding the office software, WPS it is a great alternative very similar to the Microsoft suite.

I am convinced that at this point you will not be few users who will think that the software for Linux is better than the one available for Microsoft, something that I agree on in most cases, but here we are not talking about functions or software quality, if not customs. For example, in my work they ask me to use Microsoft Word to deliver some texts, so it is Microsoft's proposal that I usually use when I have to edit texts that are not just for me. That is why I was happy to meet WPS Office, this office suite that today I will share with all of you.

How to install WPS Office on Ubuntu

Installing WPS in Ubuntu or any other distribution based on the operating system developed by Canonical is very simple, but first we have to install a dependency which is not available in the official repositories. We will be able to install this office suite by following these steps:

  1. We download the .deb package of the necessary dependency. Is about libpng12 and we can download it from THIS LINK.
  2. We install the .deb package downloaded in the previous step. To do this, just double click on the downloaded file and install it with Ubuntu Software or GDebi.
  3. We downloaded the WPS Office .deb package. We can do it from THIS LINK.
  4. As in step 2, we install the .deb package downloaded in step 3.
  5. Once installed, we will have to put it in our language. To do this, we have to click on the "A" that I have marked in the following image:

Change language in WPS Office

  1. Now we restart the program, for which it will be enough to close it and open it again.
  2. Since a text editor would not be complete without a spell checker, we will install it by opening a terminal and typing these commands, one at a time:
cd /opt/kingsoft/wps-office/office6/dicts
sudo wget http://wps-community.org/download/dicts/es_ES.zip
sudo unzip es_ES.zip
sudo rm es_ES.zip

And we would already have it. Although it must be recognized that other editors have more experience behind them and may offer more functions, it is no less true that WPS Office is a great alternative that will allow us to use a Microsoft Office clone without having to do it via the web. What do you think of this office suite?

I have been using Linux for about 3 years, and at the beginning I suffered because no office automation opens squared the Microsoft texts, although I installed the proprietary fonts, which led me to look for an alternative solution, and that was that it will use the office automation that it will use I must save in pdf so that my texts and images do not move. But WPS really looks like Microsoft's Word, but I prefer free office!

The spell checker keeps coming out in English even after installing it as it says in the article. Just correct the English words.
