Xubuntu 23.10 improves hardware support, stability and memory management, but remains on Xfce 4.18

Xubuntu 23.10

It is not surprising, since, as the saying goes, "the last will be first", but it is curious. A few hours ago, when the links in the Ubuntu cdimage began to be updated, the first ISO to be available was Xubuntu 23.10. Now that almost all the flavors have made their respective releases official, it is the turn of the Xfce edition of Ubuntu. But to be fair, it hasn't been the last, so we'll change the saying to "the first will be... those in the middle."

Although what predominates is Xfce, in Xubuntu There are also components from other desktops, such as GNOME and MATE. So in the desktop section we will not put one, but three. It does use a single kernel, the same Linux 6.5 that we find in the rest of the family. The list of new features is not very long, but, as always, we have taken care of adding some points that we know are present because they are general.

Highlights of Xubuntu 23.10

  • Supported for 9 months, until July 2024.
  • Linux 6.5.
  • Xfce 4.18.
  • The GNOME and MATE components have been upgraded to versions 45 and 1.26 respectively.
  • In this release they have focused on stability, memory management and hardware support, such as Bluetooth devices and touch panels.
  • Colored emojis are now included and supported in Firefox Thunderbird and newer GTK applications.
  • Much improved integration and stability of the screen protector.

In the known errors section:

  • The shutdown message may not appear at the end of the installation. Instead, you may only see a Xubuntu logo, a black screen with an underscore in the upper left corner, or just a black screen. You have to press Enter and the system will reboot into the installed environment.
  • Xorg crashes and user logs out after logging in or changing users on some virtual machines, including GNOME Boxes.
  • Choppy audio or poor system performance may be experienced when playing audio, but only on some virtual machines (seen on VMware and VirtualBox).
