Zentyal, an excellent distro to create local servers

The launch of the new version of the Linux distribution "Zentyal 6.2" has just been announced which continues to be built on the basis of the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS package yespecialized in the creation of local network service servers for small and medium-sized companies.

The inclusion of the distribution is positioned as an alternative to Windows Small Business Server and includes components to replace Microsoft Active Directory and Microsoft Exchange Server.

About Zentyal

Plant is distributed in two packages:

Community Edition: it has all the latest features, stable or not. The company does not offer official support for technical problems. Cloud services are not provided with Community Edition. A new version is released every three months with unofficial support for the latest version. Users are unlimited.

The Commercial Edition: which has all the latest, stable and tested features. Support is offered based on the Small and Medium Business Edition. Cloud services are integrated into the server and are based on the SMB edition. The number of users supported by the Commercial Edition is based on the purchased SMB Edition. A new commercial edition is released every two years and is supported for four years.

Furthermore Zentyal Server has a development edition which can be downloaded for free and whose source code is available under the terms of the GNU General Public License.

Zentyal servers are easy to use due to the graphical user interface (GUI). The GUI provides an easy and intuitive interface for both novice and experienced administrators to use.

Of the main characteristics of this distribution the following stand out:

  • Native support for Microsoft® Exchange Server protocols.
  • Support for Microsoft Outlook® 2007, 2010.
  • Native support for Microsoft Active Directory® 2008, 2008 R2, 2012.
  • Email, calendars, contacts.
  • Synchronization with mobile devices (support for ActiveSync®).
  • Antivirus and antispam.
  • Packaged on an Ubuntu-based server, including domain controller and directory service, basic networking and firewall services.

All aspects of the distribution are managed through a web-based interface, that unites about 40 different modules to manage the network, network services, office server, and business infrastructure components. Supported by rapid work organization of a gateway, firewall, mail server, VoIP (Asterisk), VPN server, proxy (squid), file server, employee interaction system, monitoring system, backup server, security system. network security (Unified Threat Manager), user login systems through the captive portal, etc.

After installation, each of the compatible modules is immediately ready to perform its functions. All modules are configured through the wizard system and do not require manual editing of the configuration files.

About the new Zentyal 6.2 version

Regarding the changes that are presented in the new edition, the ones that stand out the most are the following:

  • Added AppArmor service (disabled by default);
  • Instead of ScanOnAccess, OnAccessExcludeUname option is used in antivirus module, new systemd service for antivirus-clamonacc is added, Freshclam's Apparmor profile is updated;
  • Improved smart management report;
  • Updated client package with OpenVPN for Windows 10
  • Updated device configuration in virtualization module.

Another way to use Zentyal is to install of your packages about a ready-made installation of Ubuntu 18.04 or some derivative, even though the recommendation is on a server edition.

For this process, two methods are offered, one of them is using a script that is in charge of the entire process and which we can obtain by typing the following command:
