24 essential programs for 2024 (Part One)

My personal list of essentials for 2024

A new year begins in which I hope that Linux will not only continue to be my main proprietary system but also the only one (Unless I finally get around to trying FreeBSD). That's why I made and share with you a personal list of essential programs for 2024.

Of course, I would like to know your list of essential programs (It doesn't have to be 24). You know where the comment form is.

24 essential programs for 2024

In no way do I intend to introduce topics in this blog about Linux that have nothing to do with it. But, In order for you to understand the selection of titles that make up this list, I have to give it a context. I ask you to please stick to the purpose of the article in the comments.

The Argentine Republic is experiencing a process of honesty of its economy. This translates into the elimination of subsidies for transportation and public services and a general increase in prices. Also the dollar, the currency in which cloud services are paid here, changes its price upwards. Analysts also predict a strong recession.

In summary, that My new year goal is going to be to reduce costs and increase income..

How to Live Aligned with I have commented several times in this blog, I am a frequent user of cloud services that allow me to automate tasks that are not an essential part of my work. The idea is replace them with free software programs that, although they take a little more time, allow me to personalize my work.

In addition, I have to start giving more importance to the issue of privacy. It is known that these types of services increase income by sharing information about their users or content generated by them.

My Achilles heel is time management.. For reasons that are not relevant to explain here, I cannot establish a fixed routine of work and rest hours and I have to take advantage of the opportunity when it presents itself. This requires careful planning of tasks and subtasks and synchronization between devices.

This is something I have to think about a little more long term, In October 2025, support for Windows 10 ends. I have faith that things will improve a lot before then and I will be able to buy a new computer, however, I would prefer not to be forced to install Windows 11.

I use Windows 10 for two things that I haven't yet found an acceptable replacement for in Linux: Optical character recognition in complex layouts and reading text. In the latter case, to get voices that are not robotic you have to buy them.

First title on the list

kOrganizer

It is the KD project's commitment planning and reminder tool.E. Among other things, it allows us to schedule events and set alarms to remind us of them. Import calendars in standardized formats such as vCalendar and iCalendar and exchange information with cloud services such as NextCloud, Kolab and Google Calendar.

It is found in the repositories of the distributions based on this desktop.

Some of its characteristics:

  • Multiple calendars and to-do lists- kOrganizer can create multiple calendars and to-do lists or import them from other sources. It is also possible to merge the data to create new calendars.
  • Integration with other project programs:  This makes it possible to transform emails into projects or task lists with just drag and drop.
  • Automatic saving and modification: Changes made to the calendar are saved automatically. If the change was made with another program or in the cloud, the changes are recorded when you open the program.
  • Modifications: It is possible to make and redo changes an infinite number of times.
  • Integration with agenda view: If there are pending tasks, they can be seen in the weekly and daily list. To convert them into events, drag them to the agenda view.
  • Attachments: They can be attached to to-dos, website references, emails, or local files.
  • express entries: It is possible to enter pending tasks without having to enter the respective editors.
  • Calendar printing: Different styles and colors can be used for overlapping events.
  • Integration with the KDE mail client:  Allows you to automatically add invitations and other attachments.

In future articles we will continue with the 23 missing programs. In the meantime, I wish you a very happy end to the year and an even better start.
