How to authorize certain applications to multiple users

How to authorize certain applications to multiple users

This tutorial is aimed at those who share the use of the computer and do not want other users to use certain applications in our system Ubuntu.

Step 1: Prepare the system

To prepare the system we just have to go to our terminal and write

sudo groupadd class

With this we have created a group within the system to which we will give some rights and restrictions against the applications we want. In principle, in Ubuntu and in Gnu / Linux no one has full control of the system except for the Administrator. Thus, when there is already an administrator, the other users have small privileges and depending on the type of user they have more privileges.

Now, the idea is to create in this group "Class”The users we want to restrict the programs to. In this post we already talked about how to create users, in case you don't remember.

2nd step: restrict applications

Once the users are created we write in the terminal

sudo nautilus

With this we will open the file manager with administrator rights. Now we turn to the carpeta / usr / bin. In this folder are the executable files of the programs on our system. Holding down the Control key We are clicking on the programs that we want the user to be able to have the right to them and we press the right button to open their Properties. In Properties We're going to permits and a screen like this appears

In it we choose the group that we have created and we choose the permissions that we want to give it: Only Read, Read and Write or None.

So we have created a list of applications that work or not for certain users. Great for places like school classrooms, companies, public computers, etc ... where restricting the rights of certain programs can avoid numerous headaches.

As a last recommendation, it would be nice if write down the modified files, either on a sheet of paper or in a file, where you better have it to quickly know which files can give you future problems or which are restricted and which are not. The latter is a tiresome task, but it is a good practice that even the best system administrators follow.

I need that some users do not use a program that is installed and others do. I know what can be done by creating a group, restricting it and assigning this group to those users but I don't know how to do it, could you help me.
