Cozy, an easy-to-use audio book player

about cozy

In the next article we are going to take a look at Cozy. This is a open source audiobook player for the Gnu / Linux desktops. The application will allow us to listen to audiobooks without DRM (mp3, m4a, flac, ogg and wav) using a modern Gtk3 interface.

In general, we can use any audio player to listen to audiobooks. But it should be noted that a player specialized in audiobooks like Cozy makes everything easier. It will remember the playback position and allow us to continue from where we left off with each audiobook. It will also give us the possibility to adjust the playback speed of each book individually, among other things.

The interface that Cozy offers us will allow us to search for books by author, among others search functionalities. Cozy supports book covers, either by using PiP images or by adding a cover.jpg or cover.png image to the book folder. The program will pick it up and display it automatically. Something that maybe still missing is a way to automatically get audiobook metadata, including the book cover. Apparently the possibility of adding a feature to retrieve metadata from Audible.com was explored and the developer seems interested in this. But this is currently undated.

When we click on an audiobook, the app will list the chapters of the book on the right and shows the book cover (if available) on the left. It will also show us the name of the book, the author and the last time it was played, along with the total and remaining time.

From the application toolbar, we will be able to go back 30 seconds in a simple way. Just click on the rewind icon from the top left corner. In addition to the regular controls, the cover and the title, we will also find a playback speed button. This will allow us to increase the playback speed.

A sleep timer. It can be set to stop after the current chapter or after a specified number of minutes.
