Dolphin will debut new Selection Mode for touch screens, Elisa will show covers in the artist view and more news coming to KDE

Dolphine Select Mode in KDE Gear 22.10

With KDE Gear 22.08 Now available, the project will start to focus in the applications that will launch in December. She will also continue working on Plasma and Frameworks, but today we have been told about several new features related to her applications, such as the Dolphin selection mode or that Elisa will show covers in the artists' view. To be honest, this last one was one she had been looking forward to for a long time, as she didn't see the point in having the same (and ugly) icons displayed in this view. It seems that in KDE They agreed with me and the change will be seen in four months.

The Dolphin selection mode that will arrive makes more sense if used on touch screens. The current Dolphin already allows you to select by clicking the “+” that appears when hovering over it, but Dolphin 22.12 will go a step further with an even more powerful mode. These and others are explained below. new arrivals coming to KDE in the next few months.

New Features Coming to KDE

  • The new Dolphin Selection Mode will arrive in December. Nate Graham explains:

Dolphin now has a dedicated “Selection Mode” that you can optionally use to ease the item selection process with a touch screen or when using the default one-click settings. It even displays a toolbar with contextual actions you can perform on selected items. When using the mouse and keyboard, you can quickly jump in and out by pressing the space bar, holding down an item in the view, or using a menu item. It's completely optional, so if you like selecting files the old-fashioned way, you don't have to use it at all.

  • Elisa has full screen mode (Nate Graham, Elisa 22.12).
  • You can now change how the system formats addresses, names, and phone numbers (Akseli, Lahtinen, Plasma 5.26).
  • When using a horizontal panel, Kickoff can now be set to display text and/or remove the icon (Denys Madureira, Plasma 5.26.).
  • Kate now allows you to customize the font the document will print with, right in the print dialog (Christoph Cullmann, Frameworks 5.98.).
  • File thumbnails are now capable of generating preview images for RAW .arw image files (Mirco Miranda, Frameworks 5.98.).

Improvements in the user's interface

  • Elisa's "Artist" view now shows a grid of the artist's albums, instead of a sea of nondescript identical icons (Stefan Vukanović, Elisa 22.12.).
  • When entering shuffle mode in Elisa, the currently playing song is now always the first in the set of shuffle songs (Dmitry Kolesnikov, Elisa 22.12.).
  • When setting KWin rule properties, the sheet containing the list of properties now stays open until explicitly left (Ismael Asensio, Plasma 5.26.).
  • Executable files can now be launched from file searches in Kicker, Kickoff, Overview, etc.; now you will see the standard dialog “Open or run?” as expected (Nate Graham, Plasma 5.26.).
  • “Get a new [thing]” windows now support animated GIFs used as images, so for example you can now preview the effects of the recently added “Burn My Windows” fancy KWin effects (Alexander Lohnau , Frameworks 5.98.).

Minor bug fixes

  • The circular timeout indicator for Plasma notifications is now fully visible regardless of your screen's DPI and scaling factor (Eugene Popov, Plasma 5.24.7.).
  • Launchers other than Kickoff are again able to search for files (Alexander Lohnau, Plasma 5.25.5).
  • Touch scrolling works again in Kickoff (Noah Davis, Plasma 5.25.5.).
  • Global shortcuts are now capable of launching applications that define command line arguments on the Exec= keys of their .desktop files (Nicolas Fella, Frameworks 5.98.).
  • Kirigami-based applications and views that use the common FormLayout component no longer randomly freeze with certain combinations of fonts, font sizes, window sizes, and content sizes (Connor Carney, Frameworks 5.98.).

When will this all come to KDE?

Plasma 5.25.5 will arrive on Tuesday, September 6, Frameworks 5.97 will be available on September 10 and KDE Gear 22.08.1 on September 8. Plasma 5.26 will be available from October 11. KDE Applications 22.12 does not yet have an official release date scheduled.

To enjoy all this as soon as possible we have to add the repository backports of KDE, use an operating system with special repositories like Kde neon or any distribution whose development model is Rolling Release.
