GNOME 40 comes to Ubuntu 21.10, and the dock remains on the left

GNOME 40 on Ubuntu

A little over a month ago we wrote an article in which we explained how to use GNOME 40 in the latest stable version of Ubuntu. It wasn't recommended, but it could be installed and you could see how the latest version of GNOME suited Hirsute Hippo. What we can use if we install those packages is very similar to what we see in Fedora, but it seems that Canonical is going to go another way, one that I personally do not like.

I am a happy KDE user. In my best laptop I use Kubuntu, and in another more discreet Manjaro KDE, but in the most powerful I have a virtual machine with the Ubuntu development version to see what changes they are including and report on them. None of that has worked for me today, because I have opened the virtual machine and I could not see what minutes later posted OMG! Ubuntu !: the  Build impish-proposal It already uses GNOME 40, or GNOME 40.2.0 to be more exact.

Ubuntu's GNOME 40 is different from Manjaro or Fedora

To be able to see the Ubuntu 21.10 image with GNOME 40 we will have to wait for the changes to arrive to the Daily Build. In OMG! Ubuntu! yes there are screenshots, and we can see how Canonical has decided what its future Ubuntu will be.

As with other systems with GNOME 40, the system starts with the Activities view, but with the main and most important difference that the dock stays to the left and continues to occupy all vertical space. Otherwise, the gestures are the same and are also available only in Wayland. Swiping up with three fingers we will enter the view of the virtual desktops, and sliding once more we will remove the application drawer. Sliding sideways we can go from one desk to another.

It is clear that we are talking about a Daily Build, but I would have liked it to use GNOME 40 as the project intended, perhaps with the difference that the dock was visible all the time, but also at the bottom. There are rumors that Ubuntu 21.10 will arrive with GNOME 41, but right now I have my doubts. Like Canonical's decision to keep the dock on the left?

Yes, I really like it. It is one of the best features of Ubuntu. I sign for the sidebar.

I would have preferred that they keep Gnome 40 almost original, I would just change the dock always visible underneath.

I think that's like Ubuntu's "signature". I like it on the left side. and well, I have the 20.04 and it can optionally be put to the right or to the bottom, depending on the taste of each one ...

I like the sidebar that hides while I am not using it because I have configured it like this. Afterwards, each one can configure it as they want. I'm taking a liking to Ubuntu's GNOME desktop.

in fact i think gnome should rethink its design, gnome 40 has changed it ugly; Ubuntu is finally doing something good, I support you Ubuntu?

I think they could make the Dock with rounded corners, like in standard Gnome 40, but keeping it on the left and visible, it would be perfect! It would be no-doubt Ubuntu and also look modern and pretty.

it seems like it ended up with no dock available at all in ubuntu 21.10…
OFC it is a bug, after upgrade 21.04 -> 21.10 dock just disappeared and I can't find way how to get it back… It is only visible when in «Activities»
