GNOME celebrates the 100th week of TWIG with many new features in different own applications and those of its circle

This week in GNOME 100

Yesterday we reached 100 weeks since GNOME kicked off the This Week in GNOME initiative. What at first seemed like a copy of This Week in KDE, previously KDE Usability & Productivity, has ended up being a space in which they share news, but also an extra motivation for developers of all kinds to create their applications for the desktop that they use distributions like Ubuntu or Debian.

This week's entry appeared last night in the Spanish peninsular timetable as published on June 12, but that date has already been corrected to the 16th. As for the content, there is many news to deal with, most of them application related. We remind here that there are at least three levels of GNOME applications: 1, official applications; 2, hatchery applications; 3, applications that are part of the GNOME circle.

This week in GNOME

  • Files was an early adopter of the new widgets AdwOverlaySplitView y AdwToolbarView, with an updated visual style. Work continues to improve the file search experience. Searching from the grid no longer switches to a list. The goal was to show the location of the recursive results, but now the grid view has grown the ability to show the path itself. This prevents the abrupt switch from grid to list view.

GNOME files

  • Libadwaita has discontinued widgets AdwLeaflet, adwflap, adwsqueezer y AdwViewSwitcherTitle.
  • The default app panel in Settings has a new look that uses libadwaita's widgets.

  • Flowtime is a productivity app for the time management method of the same name, especially useful for the tasks we like, since other methods like the Pomodoro can interrupt us when we're more focused. Flowtime allows us to work as long as we want, and then take a break that lasts one fifth of the time we have worked. It has several useful features, including:
    • Statistics: Control the time we have worked, the time we have taken rest and what is our most productive day of the week.
    • Reduced view: Reduce clutter in the Flowtime window by activating a mode that shows only the timer.
    • Run in the background: The window can be closed to reduce distractions while the timer continues to run, and we can check the progress in GNOME Shell's background apps panel.
    • Customizable factor for calculating break time: If one fifth of the time we've worked doesn't fit your workflow, it can be changed from half the time to one tenth.
