GNOME will be able to search for files faster in Nautilus, among the most outstanding news of this week

This week in GNOME

We already have this week's article here in GNOME. What they published when yesterday was ending in the Spanish time zone were the changes that have taken place in their circle in the week that was from May 26 to June 2. It wasn't a particularly long publication, but there are some interesting news such as improvements in one of the applications we use the most in GNOME: Nautilus, although the project refers to it simply as Files.

Among the mentioned this week we again have news in libadwaita, which I never know whether to write in uppercase because it is a proper name or in lowercase because it is more of a library and there are packages that are written in lowercase. For example, the package would be pavucontrol and the PulseAudio Volume Control program. In uppercase or lowercase, it has received news, and will be included in the following list.

This week in GNOME

  • Files now search faster. A number of optimizations have been introduced that have made this possible. It will be noticed when the stable version is released, but you can already try the preview version if you use the GNOME beta repository.
  • libadwaita has received AdwNavigationSplitView, the other part needed to replace AdwLeaflet. This widget displays a sidebar and content facing each other or within a AdwNavigationView. At the same time, AdwHeaderBar automatically hides redundant window buttons when used in split view. AdwNavigationSplitView it also manages the width of the sidebar as a percentage of the total width when possible, allowing you to implement the original mockup's styling that was impossible with AdwLeaflet.
  • Forge Sparks is a new simple app for notifications from services like GitHub, Gitea or Forgejo. Is available in Flatub.

  • Calligraphy has also arrived this week, an application that converts text into large ASCII banners.

    • New widgets to select date and time.
    • Possibility to change the duration of a new recording by setting the end time.

    • Added the ability to download media files in M4A format.
    • Added more configurable options for the aria2 downloader.
    • Added options to configure when download completion notifications are shown.
    • Added the ability to delete completed downloads.
    • Added the ability to disallow conversions and simply download the appropriate video/audio format for the selected quality without converting to other formats.
    • Overwriting existing files is now a global option in Preferences instead of an individual setting in the AddDownloadDialog dialog.
    • Tube Converter will check the clipboard for a valid media url when AddDownloadDialog is opened.
    • Fixed an issue that prevented m3u8 streams from being downloaded.
    • Fixed an issue that prevented downloading media files on NTFS drives.
    • Updated UI/UX.
    • Updated translations.

Tube Converter 2023.6.0

  • Phosh 0.28.0 has been released during this week. It is a release that they have labeled as “the little things matter”, which is a way of saying that they have not included many new features, but they have polished what exists. For example, some transitions have been improved, notifications can turn the screen on, and you can set the level of urgency with which this happens. The Super key now shows the overview, pressing and holding the volume down button now works, the lock screen works on smaller screens, and libcall-ui has been updated to version 0.1.0 with some visual improvements.

In the miscellaneous section, the project has announced that it is sponsoring an Outreachy internship project for the May-August cohort where the intern will work on “Demo GNOME Platform for Workbench”.

And that's been it for this week at GNOME.
