plasma 5.22 It was, according to Nate Graham, a version that arrived without many flaws and above all to improve what already existed. Last week, much of the weekly article on what's new in KDE that will arrive in the short term future was labeled Plasma 5.22.1, and this week they have spoken to us of many other bugs that were fixed in that version, but mentioned today. So yes, it is true that Plasma 5.22 is doing well, but KDE has this: it advances so much and so fast that there are always things to be polished.
Of the bugs they have mentioned that they fixed in Plasma 5.22.1, many are app related System Monitor, and it is logical that they pay attention to it because since the last version of the desktop it is the official KDE application to see what is happening, replacing the old rocker KSysGuard. Of the rest of the news, some will arrive as soon as Tuesday, and several of them have focused on improving Gwenview, but that already in August.
New Features Coming Soon to the KDE Desktop
- Expandable tips, which will replace the old "What is this?" Now, if we press Shift in many apps that use the Kirigami and KXMLGui frameworks, additional information will appear (Frameworks 5.84).
- Now you can hold down the Alt key to drag the underlined files from Konsole to other applications for various purposes (Tomaz Canabrava, Konsole 21.08).
Bug fixes and performance improvements
- The main dialog effect that dims windows behind dialogs no longer flickers when the dialog is closed (Vlad Vahorodnii, Plasma 5.22.2).
- Discover no longer constantly warns of updates even if there aren't any (Aleix Pol González, Plasma 5.22.2).
- When Plasma restarts, either manually or automatically because it crashes, various Plasma-related shortcuts, such as Meta + number keys to activate task manager items, no longer stop working (David Edmundson, Plasma 5.22.2).
- In Plasma Wayland sessions, the cursor is no longer briefly invisible after the screen wakes up (Xaver Hugl, Plasma 5.22.2).
- A specific text label on the System Preferences Virtual Desktops page is no longer inappropriately bypassed when there is still a lot of space (Nate Graham, Plasma 5.22.2).
- On the System Preferences login screen page, the sheets that appear for syncing settings and changing wallpaper now disappear after use, providing confirmation that the action that was triggered was successful ( Nate Graham, Plasma 5.23).
- Tooltip shadows throughout Plasma no longer have a broken appearance at their corners (Marco Martin, Frameworks 5.84).
Improvements in the user's interface
- For a cleaner look, the Gwenview sidebar is now hidden by default, and its visibility is now a global setting rather than a per mode setting (Felix Ernst, Gwenview. 21.08).
- The display of Gwenview labels in the sidebar (when it is visible) is now more beautiful (Noah Davis, Gwenview 21.08).
- Gwenview no longer uses the space and backspace keys for navigation by default, to prevent the space key from conflicting with the play / pause action when navigating to a video. To navigate between the items, just use the arrow keys (Nate Graham, Gwenview 21.08).
- Konsole's split view feature will now snap split dividers to the location of other dividers when you drag them (Tomaz Canabrava, Konsole 21.08).
- Discover no longer displays a notification that an offline update was successful, because if you are able to see it it is clear that it has (Nate Graham, Plasma 5.22).
- The Breeze SDDM theme now shows a more appropriate user interface for accounts without password but with automatic login disabled (Tadej Pecar, Plasma 5.23).
- The clipboard now remembers 20 items by default, compared to 7 (Felipe Kinoshita, Plasma 5.23).
- Grid items in System Preferences and Wallpaper Pickers no longer lighten the content area when hovering over them, so it is always rendered accurately (Nate Graham, Frameworks 5.84).
Arrival dates for all of this in KDE
Plasma 5.22.2 is coming June 15 and KDE Gear 21.08 will arrive in August, but we still don't know what day exactly, I don't know what to expect. Frameworks 10 will arrive on July 5.84, and already after the summer, Plasma 5.23 will land with the new theme, among other things, on October 12.
To enjoy all this as soon as possible we have to add the KDE Backports repository or use an operating system with special repositories like Kde neon or any distribution whose development model is Rolling Release, although the latter usually take a little longer than the KDE system.
