Kubuntu 23.04 takes advantage of the advanced window stacker of Plasma 5.27, among its most outstanding novelties

Kubuntu 23.04

has been the first to announce availability, but the images were not uploaded at the time. Some time later, we can already get hold of an ISO of Kubuntu 23.04, and it comes with very important news that it borrows from the latest version of Plasma to carry the number 5. And, knowing that we would have to wait a long time until the next major update, KDE put a lot of meat on the grill, and, for example , we have the new window stacking system.

In addition to that, there have also been updated shift packages, bringing Kubuntu 23.04 up to date with the latest technologies. As data, in the release note it says that it uses Linux 5.19, but it seems to me an error that should be corrected soon. Other novelties are shared with the rest of the Lunar Lobster brothers, and the following list is the most outstanding that has come from Kubuntu 23.04.

Kubuntu 23.04 Highlights

  • Supported for 9 months, until January 2024.
  • Linux 6.2 (verified in the last Daily Build).
  • Plasma 5.27.4 (article at 5.27).
  • KDE Frameworks 5.104.
  • KDEGear 22.12.3.
  • Qt 5.15.8.
  • A Wayland session has been included, but they warn that it is for testing. It is not supported. You can choose at login, and you can use touchpad gestures and take advantage of other features. But if it is not supported it is because there is still a lot of work to be done.
  • Up-to-date applications, among which we find Firefox, VLC and LibreOffice. They also report the availability of project applications that have been updated, but are not installed by default. Among them, Krita, Kdevelop and Yakuake.
  • PipeWire replaces PulseAudio as the default audio server.
  • Updated graphic drivers.
  • Python 3.11.
  • GCC 13.
  • GlibC 2.37.
  • Ruby 3.1.
  • golang 1.2.
  • LLVM 16.

Upgrade from previous versions

The Kubuntu team says to wait a few days for updates from existing installations to go live. In the meantime, you can try to update from the terminal, for which you can follow our tutorial in which we provide more information about it. The new ISO is already available at the following button, and will soon also appear on its official website.
