Things to do after installing Ubuntu 17.04

Ubuntu 17.04

Yesterday the final version of Ubuntu 17.04 came out, a stable and interesting version that many of you will install or update quickly. Unlike other versions, Ubuntu 17.04 no longer needs to have a large swap memory, so many users will decide to remove their Ubuntu version and install Ubuntu 17.04 again.

In this case, as if you are novice users, we have to do a post-installation. Here we show you what steps to do after installing Ubuntu 17.04.

Essential tools

Ubuntu 17.04 still needs some programs to get extra settings and updates. One of these tools is Unity Tweak Tool, In order to install it, we only have to do the following in a terminal:

sudo apt-get install unity-tweak-tool

Another important tool is Ubuntu Restricted Extras, a package with codecs and accessories necessary for the operation of programs such as the multimedia player or the word processor. For its installation we have to open a terminal and write the following:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

This will make start installing those much needed codecs and libraries. Once we have this, we have to start installing those applications so necessary and so common that we use daily.

Applications in Ubuntu repositories

These are the applications that we can find in the Ubuntu repositories:

  • Corebird
  • Shutter
  • Chromium
  • Gimp
  • Steam
  • VLC
  • Virtualbox

These programs can be installed through the Ubuntu Software Center or through a terminal using the command «sudo apt-get install ».

Applications external to Ubuntu repositories

We will find these applications either through deb applications or through external repositories. In any case, in Ubunlog We have already told you how to do it:

Applets for Unity

Ubuntu Unity allows us to have and add applets to keep any extra applications or functions more at hand. In this case we can add the following applets that will increase the functionality of the desktop:

  • KDE Connect Indicator. This applet is becoming more and more important and interesting as it allows us to connect our smartphone with our computer.
  • Simple Weather. It allows us to see and have the time on our desk. Something useful if we are working with the computer and we want to know how long it will be in one or two hours.

All this will make us have a faster and more complete Ubuntu 17.04. Being able to be suitable for work, for graphic design or for any other function.

If you continue with Unity, Con gnome will be released in version 18

Personally, I wait to download 17 until the LTS version comes out

Giovanni Gapp Thanks for the tip. I don't like Unity at all, so much so that I changed the distribution. When they return to Gnome, I will happily return to Ubuntu.

Hello, a question, I have always wanted to try Ubuntu, but for someone new it would be good to install the most recent version directly or is there a more recommended one? Thanks in advance.

      Get started with this version.
      What OS do you use?
Try first on a virtual machine.

Depending on the speed of your Internet and which server you are connected to, try to change the server.

If I change my desktop or I am on a desktop other than unity, can I download the same updates?
Does anyone know which is the best desktop for Ubuntu?

  14.   CESAR said

The first thing I would do is delete it.

It does not allow you to update or install anything.
