What's new in Xubuntu 19.10

Today is October 17, the day of launch of the Eoan Ermine family. Although there is talk of an animal with its adjective, what is released every six months are eight different operating systems, among which are Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Ubuntu MATE. One of the versions with a lighter graphical environment is, in theory, the one used by Xfce and in this article we are going to talk about the Xubuntu 19.10 highlights Eoan Ermine.

There are some features that are shared by all operating systems released today, such as the kernel Linux 5.3 or initial support for ZFS as root, but each flavor includes its own new features. Many of them are related to updated packages or the graphical environment, and Xubuntu 19.10 uses Xfce 4.14. Initially, this version of the graphical environment together with the new Xubuntu improves the performance of past versions, but that has yet to be demonstrated.

  • The Light Locker utility has been changed to the Xfce Screensaver. The new option integrates seamlessly with Xfce 4.14 and adds support for suspend and hibernate laptops, support for X11 screensaver signals, support for all Xscreensaver screensavers, and support for DPMS.
  • Two new keyboard shortcuts have been added:
    • META + L locks the screen.
    • META + D shows or hides the desktop.
  • Support for using color emojis.
  • Initial support for ZFS as root.
  • Updated packages.
  • Supported until July 2020.

The release of Xubuntu 19.10 Eoan Ermine not yet 100% official. It is now available to download from the Canonical FTP server, which you can access from here, but they need to update the web page and we can download the image from it.
